Chicago Cubs catcher and manager Gabby Hartnett hit his famous “Homer In The Gloamin” against the Pittsburgh Pirates on September 28th, 1938 as the Cubs continued a frantic push for the National League pennant. With darkness descending on Wrigley Field and the umpire’s declaration that no baseball would be played that day after the ninth inning, the 37-year old Harnett crushed Mace Brown’s 0-2 offering into the left field seats to give Chicago the walk-off 6-5 victory. Fans stormed the field and the momentum of Hartnett’s homer delivered Chicago their pennant.
Offered in this lot is a program from the “Homer In The Gloamin” game. The program is unscored, although Frank Demaree’s name in the right field position has been crossed out, as the two-time All-Star started in left field over University of Texas legend Augie Galan, whose name in the left field position has been lightly crossed out. With Galan sitting, 1945 National League MVP Phil Cavarretta started in right. This item is in excellent condition.
