The Argentinian striker Guillermo Stabile was presented chalice by the World Cup Organizing Committee (now known as FIFA) for leading the inaugural 1930 World Cup in goals scored. Stabile entered the World Cup in Montevideo as the backup striker to Roberto Cherro, who started Argentina’s first game of the World Cup against France. But before the second game, Cherro suffered a crippling anxiety attack, presenting Stabile with an opportunity to impress Argentina’s 27-year old manager Juan José Tramutola in the coming game against Mexico. Stabile pounced early, scoring in the 8th and 17th minutes before completing his hat trick with an 80th minute strike to finalize Argentina’s 6-3 victory. In keeping with the proverbial “hot hand”, Tramutola started Stabile in the final group stage game against Chile and was rewarded with a pair of goals in the 12th and 13th minutes from the Huracan striker. Stabile rounded out his World Cup scoring with a pair of goals against the United States in Argentina’s 6-1 semifinal victory, and with Argentina’s second goal in the final match against Uruguay, a 4-2 win for the host nation at Estadio Centenario.

In total, Stabile scored eight goals in the World Cup, far ahead of the runners up Jose Pedro Cea of Uruguay and Bert Patenaude of the United States, who managed five and four goals respectively. Stabile continued to score for Argentina whenever selected by the national team, managing 23 goals in 31 international caps. Stabile’s club soccer career soon took him from Huracan to Europe, where he played for Genoa and Napoli of Italy and Red Star Paris of France. After retiring as an active player, Stabile became one of Argentina’s most successful managers, winning six South American championships and three Argentine Primera Division titles with Racing Club de Avellaneda.

This offered chalice has etched on side “CAMPEONATO MUNDIAL DE FOOTBALL, MONTEVIDEO 1930”, while the other side is embellished with a circular match action scene with Stabile shooting on goal, all in raised relief. Below that scene is engraved “CONSEJO DE LA A.U. DE F., A GUILLERMO STABILE, GOLEADOR”. The trophy is in good condition. This item derives from the collection of Rony Almeida.
