The Virginia Squires were one of the charter franchises in the old ABA when they were the Oakland Oaks. The Oaks then moved to Washington, D.C. and became the Washington Caps for one season (1969-70). The NBA and ABA were already in merger talks and the presence of a team in Washington, D.C. was a stumbling block, especially for Baltimore Bullets owner Abe Pollin, who was looking to move his team to D.C. The team moved again, becoming the Virginia Squires based out of Norfolk.

The 1970-71 Squires team finished the regular season record of 55-20, which was the tops in the Eastern Division. The Squires defeated the New York Nets in six games of the Eastern Division semifinals before falling to the Kentucky Colonels in the East finals. Offered here is a red, white and blue basketball that has been signed 12 members of the 1970-71 inaugural season of the Virginia Squires. All of the signatures have been signed in black marker and include Neil Johnson, Doug Moe, Ray Scott, Jim Eakins, Mike Barrett, George Irvine, George Carter, Charlie Scott, Bill Bunting, Al Bianchi, Roland "Fatty" Taylor and one other. ABA basketballs typically bring as much as $2,500 at auction in unsigned condition and ABA basketballs with Dolph are tougher to find than some of the other commissioners. This ball comes with a LOA from Beckett Authentication.
