This Olympic diploma is a approximate 16 x 22 inch paper certificate awarded to the top six finishers in competitions at the London Olympic Games in 1948. Due to World War II, these were the first Olympics held in 12 years. Since 1896, the top three finishers have received medals, but beginning with these games, the athletes placing fourth, fifth, and sixth received certificates. Since 1984, diplomas for seventh and eighth place finishers were added. These certificates are known as Olympic Diplomas. This one was awarded to "Mr. Raul Bove Ceriani Uruguay." These certificates were signed by the President of the International Olympic Committee "Sigfried Edstrom", the President of the 1948 games "Partel" and the Chairman of the organizing committee, Lord Burghley, who signed "Burghley." Despite the fragile nature and the age, this item is in tremendous condition with no creases, tears or markings. However, there are some light pencil markings on the reverse. Excellent condition. This is a rarely seen highly-prized personal award from the Olympic Games of 65 years ago.
