The 1992 Summer Olympics were held in Barcelona, Spain from July 25th to August 9th. 1992 was the last year the both the Summer and Winter Olympics were held in the same year as starting in 1994, the Winter Olympics began their 4-year interval. The 25th Olympiad will be long remembered for the participation of The Dream Team USA Men’s Basketball Team that steamrolled their competition, led by Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. The opening ceremony was notable as the cauldron was lit from an arrow shot by Paralympic archer Antonio Rebollo. The Games also saw the return of South Africa after their international ban due their apartheid policy after the 1960 Olympics and a unified Germany made their return as one country for the first time since 1964.

Offered here is one of the torches used in the lead up of the 1992 Summer Olympics. Starting from its traditional starting point of Athens, Greece, the torch relay began on June 9, 1992 and made its way to Barcelona. Designed by Andre Ricard, this torch measures approximately 26-inches tall and has a silver-colored cylinder-shape. The torch has “XXV OLIMPIADA BARCELONA 1992” and the Barcelona Olympic logo printed in gold with black borders and runs vertically down the front. At the top bottom is engraved “CBZ-8007”. This torch had a different and distinguishable design than prior Olympic torches. The top has a circle border with a burner-shaped head which was designed to indicate the final destination of the flame. A great piece of Olympic history!
