On May 11, 1963, Sandy Koufax of the L.A. Dodgers tossed his second no-hitter, a two-walk gem against the rival San Francisco Giants. Frank Walsh was behind the plate that day, and Koufax appeared good with Walsh’s performance as he penned this game used ball to Walsh after the contest. Koufax inscribes on a side, “To Frank – Thanks for a great job every time – especially the No hitter - Sandy Koufax.” The inscription and signature are very light, grading (“4/10”) but clearly legible. It’s interesting how gracious Koufax was after the game since many people thought the first walk, an 8th inning 3-2 pitch to Giants catcher Bob Bailey, was actually strike three. Attempting to preserve his no hitter, Koufax issued a two-out, four pitch 9th inning walk to pinch hitter Willie McCovey. If Walsh rings up Bailey in the 8th inning, does Koufax get out Stretch to toss a perfect game? Who knows? The Spalding off-white ONL Giles ball exhibits nice game use with a few abrasions commensurate with a major league game. A tremendous piece of baseball history directly from one of Sandy Koufax’ greatest games. LOA from PSA/DNA.
