Presented here is a fascinating and unique baseball signed by eight cast members of the 1942 movie “The Pride of the Yankees”. This movie was a biography of Lou Gehrig, the Hall of Fame first baseman who succumbed to ALS in 1941. Several of Ruth’s teammates, including Babe Ruth, Bill Dickey, Mark Koenig and more, had roles in this film. This ball has also been signed by some of baseball’s greats including Babe Ruth, whose bold black ink signature appears on the side panel, a rarity for The Babe, whose signature often appears on the sweet spot. Mickey Mantle’s signature is directly below Ruth’s signature in faded black pen and Bill Dickey’s signature is in bold black pen above Ruth towards the laces. Signed on the sweet spot is Lou Gehrig’s widow Eleanor Gehrig, with printed above her name “FRANK MAHER With appreciation”. Frank Maher was a member of the sound department that worked on the film. Other signatures include Walter Brennan, Warren Spahn, Ernie Banks, Duke Snider, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron Eddie Mathews, Stan Musial, Sam Wood and others. This ball has been mounted on a wood base. The displays heavy toning and has a coating of shellac that has some chips. A great piece of baseball and cinema history, all together on one ball. This comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA for the signatures.
