Some alternate uniforms catch on and some don’t. For the 1979 Philadelphia Phillies, the latter applies to the infamous “Saturday Night Special” all-burgundy uniforms. This classic uniform style was debuted on May 19, 1979 when the Phillies hosted the Former pitcher Nino Espinosa. These uniforms were supposed be worn for selected Saturday games for the remainder of the season, but due to the reception they received, they were scrapped after the one game – a 10-5 loss to the Montreal Expos at Veterans Stadium.

This offered 1979 Philadelphia Phillies all-burgundy Saturday Night Special uniform was worn by pitcher Nino Espinosa. Espinosa did not appear in the infamous game but was in uniform. Espinosa’s uniform was manufactured by Rawlings and the jersey is a size 42. The jersey has a zipper-down front with the Phillies’ 1970’s/80’s-style “P” sewn on the upper left chest in white tackle twill. Espinosa’s number “35” is sewn on the upper right chest in the same white tackle twill. The Rawlings size 42 tag with the “SET 1” flag, along with a burgundy tag with “42 79 1” in white is on the right front tail. The sleeves have a white stripe that runs from the neck to the sleeve end and the back has “35” sewn on in white tackle twill and “ESPINOSA” sewn on in white tackle twill with a matching burgundy nameplate. This jersey displays light use.

The matching burgundy pants have a white stripe down each side with a burgundy belt line at the waist and two pockets on the rear. The Rawlings size 34 (waist) tag is sewn on the inside back waist with an additional white tag with burgundy embroidered numbers that read “34 25 79 35 1” and has a “SET 1” flag attached. The numbers correspond to the waist size, inseam, year, player number and set. These pants display light use. The final item in this lot is a Phillies cap. This size 7 ½ cap is all burgundy with the Phillies “P” embroidered in white on the front. The underside brim is green and the inner head band is white. This cap displays light use. This entire lot comes with a LOA from MEARS (315878) for the game use and has been given its highest grade of A10.
