The Uruguayan attacker Juan Alberto Schiaffino was issued this 1950 FIFA World Cup championship medal by the 1950 World Cup host city of Rio de Janeiro. Schiaffino fired the celeste XI to victory in Brazil with three important goals in the tournament, including the strike to tie the final match against Brazil at a scoreline of 1-1 before the eventual winner came from his teammate Alcides Ghiggia. A star for Penarol in Uruguay and the Italian blue bloods AC Milan and AS Roma, Schiaffino earned 21 caps for Uruguay and scored nine international goals.

This offered medal is circular and etched on the front with “Estadio Municipal de Rio de Janeiro” in high-relief over a high-relief etching of the stadium. An enameled crest is inlaid on the front of the medal. The back of this historic medal is etched with “Juan A. Schiaffino”, while “Campeonato Mundial De Football” and “Brasil 1950” are etched in high relief against the border. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
