Hall of Famer Frank Robinson’s career began with the Cincinnati Reds when he unanimously won the 1956 National League Rookie of the Year. Robinson’s tenure with the Reds lasted until 1965, but not before earning the NL MVP honors in 1961 and finishing in the top 5 in two other seasons with Cincinnati. In one of the more lopsided trades in history, the Reds traded Robinson to the Baltimore Orioles in December of 1965 for Jack Baldschun, Milt Pappas and Dick Simpson. Robinson would immediately reap havoc on the American League as he became the first and to-date, only player in baseball history to win MVP awards in both leagues. Robinson also led the Orioles to the 1966 and 1970 World Series titles, cementing his rightful place in baseball’s pantheon.

Offered here is a road gray flannel Cincinnati Reds jersey vest that was worn by Robinson during the 1960’s – most likely in 1961 and 1962. This MacGregor size 46 button-down vest has “CINCINNATI” and “20” sewn on the front in red and black tackle twill. The open sleeves are bordered with thick black piping and the sides have white stripes. The MacGregor size tag is sewn on the inside back collar. The back of this jersey has “20” sewn on in red and black tackle twill and the inside right-center tail has a white patch with “60” embroidered in red and a “SET 2 1960” flag attached. According to the game used experts at Sports Investors Authentication, who have authenticated this jersey “In 1961, the Reds changed the style of their road jerseys to what is currently shown on the jersey in review. The sides of the jersey, being a different fabric are consistent with what was issued to players in 1960 but was not common in 1961. With the jersey being lettered correctly to team specs for the 1961 season, it is very reasonable to see this jersey being used in the 1961 Spring Training and then held as a back up where it most likely saw action during the regular season. The presence of the right armband – added to mirror the memorial arm band on the left armhole just prior to the 1962 season-further confirms that his jersey was held for the duration of the 1961 season.”

This incredible jersey displays moderate game use with laundering wear, along with fraying and fading of the twill letters and numbers. There are a few loose threads, several stains present and a handful small holes throughout the jersey. The bottom six buttons hall have cracks throughout, with the exception of the top button indicating that the button was restored with a button from a very similar style. All of the letters and numbers are original to the jersey. A great early-career gamer from one of the greatest players in baseball history. This jersey comes with a LOA from Sports Investors Authentication (200708E2) for the use by Robinson.
