George Washington presided over the United States as its first president, from 1789 to 1797. Tasked with growing a fledgling nation while remaining friendly with the European giants who encroached on the fruitful western hemisphere, Washington navigated a treacherous time in global politics. The Jay Treaty of 1795, one of Washington’s most important diplomatic masterstrokes, ensured friendly relations with the empire of Great Britain, most notably by normalizing trade relations.

Perhaps no man who held the office of President of the United States was as well-rounded or accomplished as Thomas Jefferson. Before he became our third president, Jefferson had been a successful lawyer and colonial representative. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress, drafted the Declaration of Independence and then signed it on behalf of his state of Virginia. He governed Virginia during the Revolution then became the minister to France, Washington's Secretary of State and John Adams' Vice President.

Offered here is a document dated August 7th, 1794 that has been signed by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, the first and third presidents of the United States respectively. Washington was already in his second term as President, while Jefferson was in the midst of planning his run for president in 1796, having left the Washington administration in 1793. This approximately 9 ½ x 10-inch document has both English and Dutch print, with handwritten additions to fill in the text and the presidential seal at the bottom. Both Washington and Jefferson have signed their names in black ink. The document has type on both sides and appears to have been adhered to a more solid paper backing for preservation.
