“Old Aches and Pains” rapped out 2,749 hits over his 20 year Major League career, all spent with the Chicago White Sox. If he did not miss almost two full seasons due to World War II, Appling would most certainly be a member of the 3,000th hit club. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1964.
