In 1994, Mark Messier willed the New York Rangers to the team's first Stanley Cup in 54 years. Two seasons later, Wayne Gretzky joined his former teammate on Broadway, hoping to capture that second cup. The pairing was electric for the NHL, even if the Rangers lost in the Eastern conference finals to the Philadelphia Flyers. Both Messier and Gretzky ended their Hall of Fame careers as Rangers. This SI from Oct. 6, 1996, captures the two Rangers stern-faced and gazing directly into the camera, an urban playground chain-link fence behind and the title "West Side Story/ Mark Messier welcomes his old pal Wayne Gretzky to the hood."
