From 1981 through 1993, at the suggestion of his accountant, The Yankee Clipper kept a private diary detailing all his daily activities and to help keep track of his expenses. However, DiMaggio did not buy a notebook but wrote his daily activities and many intimate thoughts on random pieces of paper, often loose sheets of paper with hotel logos. There were approximately 2,500 sheets of paper with mentions throughout including his marriage with Marilyn Monroe as well as the stress he felt from being famous. All the sheets were purchased by Steiner Sports and they broke up the lot with these beautiful display collages. This handwritten sheet is from Wednesday, May 20, 1982 and is penned on a 7 x 10.25 inch “The Sheraton Towers” letterhead in Joe DiMaggio’s own hand in his beautiful flowing script. DiMaggio states, “Dick Bailey picked me up at 10 AM after having breakfast in the Stage at 9 AM. We drove to Wykegal (sic) golf course in Westchester to play in the L.P.G.A. golf classic sponsored by Chrysler-Pontiac. Teed off at 12:15 PM along with Dick, Ray Perkins, Larry and our pro Muffin Devlin. We played a good scramble game and we got through at 5 P.M. Met with many people in the terrace for an hour before they were all called to dinner – that’s when Dick and I left for New York where he dropped me off – and he continued to Colts Neck, N.J. Had dinner with one of my friend’s at La Scala at 10 P.M. Glad it’s all over and will be off to San Francisco in A.M.” Also below DiMaggio penned his expenses “Breakfast & Dinner – 25.00 Tips --- Bell boys golf courses, etc. 20.00. $45.00.” According to the calculations, it is obvious Joe D. did not buy dinner that night. Also included is a capsule of dirt from Yankee Stadium, a replica photo of the great DiMaggio swing and a nameplate with “Joe DiMaggio ‘A Day in the life of Joe DiMaggio, The Joe DiMaggio diaries May 20, 1982.” These items are framed to a magnificent 16.50 x 24.25 inches. This is a tremendous item which allows us to follow the great Joe DiMaggio around for a day in his life. COA for infield dirt from MLB Authentication, cert #EK794489 and COA for collage from Steiner Sports.
