In its attempt to persuade the International Olympic Committee to select Sofia, Bulgaria as the host of the 1994 Winter Olympics, the Bulgarian Olympic Committee developed this Portfolio of winter sports, published in tandem with the Union of Bulgarian Artists. Included in this dossier are 18 vivid, black-and-white and color illustrations demonstrating the many sports (Bobsled, Hockey, Skiing, Figure Skating, Biathlon, Cross Country Skiing, Ski Jumping) to be held at the Olympics along with some of Bulgaria’s best athletes for those events. The artist has titled and signed each illustration (in Cyrillic). The tri-fold portfolio measures 20” x 14” when folded. Its cover is a textured gray and tan with a gold embossed “Sofia ’94” and stylized Olympic Rings emblem on the left side. It contains a preface to the illustrations, written in Cyrillic on the front panel and English on the back. The B.O.C.’s Chairman Ivan Slavkov’s business card is fastened to the right fold below the embossed gold “Bulgaria Olympic Committee” (written in English and Cyrillic). Bulgaria’s bid for the 1994 Winter Olympics fell short of Lillehammer, Norway’s bid. This is a most unique item that unveils the mystery behind the Olympic selection process.
