When the Sporting News selected the best player in the decade since World War II ended, “The Bible of Baseball” declared that player to be Stan Musial. From 1946 to 1956 “Stan the Man” was a model of absolute professionalism and sportsmanship. An All-Star every year, Musial was voted the National League’s Most Valuable Player twice, won the batting championship five times, led in doubles six and triples five. In 1955, the year before he was voted “Player of the Decade”, Musial belted 33 home runs with a .318 batting average and finished seventh in the National League with 108 RBI.

In a nod to not only Stan’s worth as a player but also his value as the very face of the Cardinals franchise, team owner Gussie Busch declared that Musial was absolutely not available for any trade, no matter who the Cards were offered in return. Offered here is this incredible St. Louis Cardinals home jersey worn by Musial during the 1955 season, along with a beautiful pair of red Cardinals’ stirrups. This Rawlings size 44 cream-colored flannel beauty boasts the classic two cardinals perched on a gold bat with “Cardinals” both in chenille stitching across the chest. Red piping adorns the collar and the zippered front with the piping joining at the base of the zipper. The front of the jersey has rounded tails that split at the base of the zipper and a brown tag is stapled into the right-center tail that reads “3 1571”. The same red piping caps of each “set in” style sleeves with the ventilated under arms and the sleeves themselves measure approximately 4 ½ inches in length. “Stan Musial” has been embroidered in red stitching at the base of the left front tail and above that is the “Rawlings Hall of Fame Flannel” and “44” tags.

The back has Musial’s number “6” in red on navy felt. The inside front left tail has the “WASH IN LUKEWARM WATER WITH MILD SOAP DRY SLOWLY AT ROOM TEMPERATURE” tag and a “SET I 1955” flag attached. Unlike many flannel jerseys from this era, this jersey is in tremendous condition as it was properly stored in the decades since it was made, lacking any rusty stains or insect damage that often mars wool flannels and according to the game used experts at MEARS, who have provided an LOA for this jersey, they have determined that no repairs were made. Musial has signed this jersey in black marker below the red chenille-stitched “Stan Musial on the lower left front tail and inscribed “To Wayne”. Also included in this lot is a pair of red St. Louis Cardinals’ stirrups. These stirrups run knee-high and each have two red/navy/red stripes on the lower shins. The stirrups are in excellent condition. This impeccable jersey comes with a LOA from the game used experts at MEARS (317253), who have graded this jersey a top grade of A9.5. Please note that MEARS in their LOA states “A minor ½ point deduction was assessed for a very small stain on front of shirt and repositioning of the 6 on reverse. The font of the numeral compares favorably to the period image in the MEARS LOA. Examination on the light table reveals the possible indication (when examining the inside of the “6”) that the “6” was repositioned at one point. The “6” appears to be original and this fact is noted for accuracy.” Additionally, a LOA from Beckett Authentication covers the signature.
