Nobody can escape the paperwork of life and if you were Pete Rose in the 1970s much of the paperwork came in the form of contracts, agreements, expense reports and reimbursement forms. Rose received a letter dated March 6, 1974 from Ernie Green at the International Merchandising Corporation in response to an invoice submitted February 11, 1974, with an enclosed check in the amount of $325.82 for reimbursement of expenses (airfare, cab ride and food) involved with Rose’s participation in “The Superstars” television show; The short-lived series pitted professional athletes against each other in sporting competitions outside of their own realms. Another typed letter dated February 11, 1974 written by Ann Smith representing Rose for The Professionals Inc. confirms Rose participation on The Superstars in the following events: Golf, Tennis, Bowling, 100-Yard Dash, Obstacle Course, Weight Lifting and Bicycle Race. A seven page contract to appear on the show with cover letter dated December 7, 1973, and an event interest form is stamped with a “Pete Rose” signature stamp on the cover letter and signed by Rose on the final page. Another contract dated March 5, 1979 is for the creation of an animated character entitled “Little Charlie Hustle,” stating: “Whereas, Pete Whisenant conceived the concept of a caricature of ROSE as a young baseball player used to convey instructions and entertainment related to baseball, such caricature constituting the character conceived by Pete Whisenant as “Little Charlie Hustle.” The Agreement is hand signed on page 8 “Peter Edward Rose” by the hit-king and dated March 14, 1979. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
