The R309-1 Goudey Premiums are some of the most attractive of all the premium issues from that era, and were available only by mail in exchange for Goudey Gum wrappers. The quality of production is amazing as they were produced on thick cardboard stock with a fold-out easel back, suitable for display. These type backs are very susceptible to light creasing in and around the easel back. Since these premiums were likely very expensive to produce, this “set” was limited to four cards. This example is of the 1933 National League All-Star team, the first such elected squad. This card features John McGraw looking dapper in his street clothes, with Hall of Famers Bill Terry, Max Carey, Chick Hafey, Chuck Klein, Gabby Hartnett, Hack Wilson, Frankie Frisch, Carl Hubbell, Paul Waner and Pie Traynor all surrounding the skipper. This card exhibits one light corner crease and a moderate nick at the top edge. There are two small creases, both inching towards the fully intact easel back, and are very common, usually caused by shipping. This is a great example of this tough premium card, containing many HOFers and appearing much stronger than its assigned grade. SGC Graded 30 GOOD 2.
