In a complete departure from their very colorful sets of 1933, 1934 and 1935, the Goudey company issued a black and white cards set in 1936. At a total of 25 unnumbered cards, this is also the smaller set Goudey issued during their decade long run. The fronts feature a nice up close shot of the player with a facsimile autograph, all contained within non-Goudey like wide borders. The reverses contain a short statistical bio with two "plays" with a game. Lots of flipping going on in 1936! These cards are also different from their predecessors as the cards are in extremely short supply, making complete sets in high grade difficult to complete. Presented here is a complete set of 25 cards, all which have been graded by SGC. Includes: SGC 80 EX/NM 6 - 1 card, Castleman; SGC 70 EX+ 5.5 - 3 cards with Coscarat, Hildebrand and Newsom; SGC 60 EX 5 - 11 cards with Brubaker, Camilli, Cuyler, Dykes, Gomez, Greenberg, Harris, Hemsley, Klein, Vosmik and Werber; SGC 55 VG/EX+ 4.5 - 4 cards with Berger, Bonura, Higgins and Martin; SGC 50 VG/EX 4 - 3 cards with Bordagaray, Cochrane and Crosetti; SGC 45 VG+ 3.5 - 1 card, Derringer; SGC 40 VG 3 - 2 cards with Ferrell and Waner. While the technical grades are somewhat "collector grade" they are actually high grade for the issue, plus with white borders and crisp images, they display much better than their grade. In addition, the reverses are predominately clean. As we stated, these cards are very tough to locate in high grade! A review of the SGC population report lists 542 cards from the 1936 Goudey issue being graded, with a scant 13% grading at Near Mint or better. Most are within the grades of our complete set. But while the grades are similar, there cannot be a similar high quality presentation this complete set commands. The scarce 1936 Goudey issue is rarely offered in complete set form, with only a handful changing hands over the last dozen years. This is by far the nicest one in terms of eye appeal, with this offering being a perfect opportunity to knock this set off your list.
