Offered is a trophy presented to Philadelphia college basketball legend Tom Gola by Madison Square Garden in 1984. The solid bronze and wood trophy features the legend “Presented to Tom Gola Member of Madison Square Garden’s All-Time College Basketball Team 1934-1984” engraved in black on a 1¼ x 3-inch gold metal plaque mounted on the 1 x 7½ x 9-inch brown wood base. Dominating the trophy is the 4 x 6 x 9½-inch bronze detailed sculpture atop the base featuring a basketball player dribbling the ball in his left hand on a basketball court floor. The reproduction of the S.A. Efron sculpture features the artist’s facsimile signature engraved in the base. The award was presented to Gola and the other 13 members of Madison Square Garden’s All-Time College Basketball Team introduced in ceremonies at the “new” Garden on December 14, 1984. The age of major college basketball at the Garden started on December 29, 1934, when Westminster College met St. John's and Notre Dame opposed New York University in the first double-header scheduled in the Garden. Other notable honorees that night included George Mikan of DePaul, Bill Russell of San Francisco, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of UCLA, Hank Luisetti of Stanford, Bill Bradley of Princeton, Maurice Stokes of St. Francis of Loretto, Pa., Elgin Baylor of Seattle, Sherman White of LIU, Oscar Robertson of Cincinnati, Jerry West of West Virginia, Bob Davies of Seton Hall, and Dick McGuire of St. John's. Gola and his LaSalle Explorers won the 1952 National Invitational Tournament National Championship at the Garden, and the first-ever Holiday Festival basketball title later that year.
