As one of the greatest hitters of his day, Don Mattingly was no stranger to wielding the lumber, with his hitting exploits earning him Yankee legend status. Based upon factory records and player specifications, Mattingly used this bat during the 1984 season, the year he hit .343 and won his only batting title! In addition, the PSA/DNA LOA which accompanies this item indicates this particular bat was obtained in 1984 at Yankee Stadium directly from Don Mattingly! This 34 inch, 31 ounce M110 signature model bat exhibits tremendous game use with ball marks, stitch impressions, cleat and rack marks with slight checking on the barrel from repeated ball contact. The slightly cracked handle has been professionally repaired, is scored (whittled down) by Mattingly to enhance his grip, and there is a nice coat of pine tar along the scored handle. Mattingly's number "23" appears on the knob, which is extremely rare. After the batting title and instant Yankee stardom, Mattingly bats were prone to be "carried away" by others, and Don took to adding various retired numbers to the knobs of his bats to confuse those looking to pilfer his equipment. Funny, but you would think those people would also want a bat with DiMaggio's and Ruth's numbers on the knob! If these facts already aren't enough, the lower sweet spot contains a bold, black Sharpie "Don Mattingly" signature.
