The 1941 baseball season is considered by many baseball historians as the greatest season of all time. Ted Williams was in the midst of hitting .406; the Yankees’ Joe DiMaggio hit in 56 consecutive games; the Brooklyn Dodgers (yes, THOSE Brooklyn Dodgers) were battling the St. Louis Cardinals for the National League pennant. All this while a World War broke out and current players enlisted and were drafted into service to their country. One event during this season which is somewhat overlooked was the beginning of the retirement of uniform numbers. This tradition began on July 4, 1941, the day the Yankees retired Lou Gehrig’s number 4. A month earlier Gehrig succumbed to the disease which bears his name and the Yankees honored him with this Memorial. Unfortunately, the game on July 4th was rained out and the ceremony was held two days later on July 6th. That might be the reason why this ticket is still fully intact. The corners are square on this 6” x 2.5” ticket, with light toning around the edges, a somewhat muted green color and light wrinkling. The reverse has some added tape along the top edge, some moderate staining and "#49" written in pencil. This is likely an internal Yankee number for refunds and exchanges. The famous portrait of Gehrig graces the middle. This is an opportunity to acquire a full copy of this important ticket. PSA Authentic and encapsulated Full ticket.
