For Roger Maris, 1961 marked a special year in the New York Yankees slugger’s career. Maris belted 61 homers in 1961, a record that stood for 37 years, while leading the Bronx Bombers to a World Series title and earning American League MVP honors. Many argue that Maris, who had his No. 9 retired by the Yankees in 1984, should be in the Hall of Fame after winning three World Series titles, two MVP awards and appearing in seven All-Star games. This original 8x10-inch Associated Press wire photo features Maris chatting with Cincinnati Reds first baseman Gordy Coleman at Yankees Stadium before Game 1 of the 1961 World Series on Oct. 4. Maris’ signature is featured in bold, red Sharpie across his right shoulder on the photo that depicts the Yankees’ slugger and Coleman both holding a baseball bat. The photo caption reads, “(YS7) YANKEE STADIUM, N.Y., Oct. 4 – SERIES OPENER IS NEAR – New York Yankee outfielder Roger Maris, left, chats with Cincinnati Red first baseman Gordy Coleman during pregame workout for World Series opener at Yankee Stadium in New York today. Maris, whose 61 home runs set a major league record for full season’s play, will move to center fielder for series opener replacing ailing Mickey Mantle. (AP Wire photo) (bes41145stf) 1961” While the backside of the photo features some discoloration, the face of the image is in remarkable condition. There appears to be a ink finger print in the bottom right corner of the photo by the caption. The photo comes with a full PSA LOA.
