Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Glavine had his breakout season in 1991 when he won 20 games for the first time and took home the National League Cy Young Award. Not coincidentally, the Atlanta Braves went from worst to first as they won the NL Pennant and lost to the Minnesota Twins in a classic seven-game World Series that ended in extra innings. Glavine was 20-11 in 1991, with a 2.55 ERA, striking out 192 batters in 201 innings.
Offered here is one of the home Braves’ jerseys worn by Glavine during his first Cy Young Award and 20-win season of 1991. This Wilson size 42 button-down jersey has “Braves” in cursive script across the chest in sewn on red and navy tackle twill, with a tomahawk paraph sewn on below in red and navy tackle twill with gold embroidered stitching accents. Navy/red/navy piping runs around the collar and down both sides of the buttons and along the sleeve ends. The Wilson tag with “42” and “EX” flags are sewn on the front left tail and a white patch with “91” embroidered in navy is sewn below. A soft white lining is around the inner placket and the left sleeve has “JWM” sewn in navy tackle twill in memory of longtime Braves executive John Mullen and was only worn in 1991.
The back has “GLAVINE” sewn on in navy tackle twill on a matching white nameplate, which is sewn on above Glavine’s number “47” in red and navy tackle twill below. This jersey displays excellent wear showing a season’s worth of wash and wear. The nameplate appears original and unrestored, which indicates this jersey was likely removed from circulation and not used in the minors. The nameplate is unbacked with interfacing, so it has puckered around the edges where it is stitched to the jersey. The knit placket trim sewing is uncharacteristically unfinished at the bottom edge of the tail, likely due to a simple manufacturing oversight. Glavine has signed his name in faded black marker below his number on the back and inscribed in darker black marker “CY YOUNG 91 20-8”. Please note that Glavine inscribed the incorrect record of his 1991 season. This jersey comes with a LOA from Sports Investors Authentication (190609A1) for the game use and an LOA from Beckett Authentication (AA06986) for the signature.
