As a unique way to promote their uniforms, outfitter Stall & Dean announced in their 1914 catalog that they commissioned silversmith Reed & Barton to create a sterling silver, gold-lined trophy cup to award the best team in any league which had adopted their uniforms. And what better way to award the championship club than to feature the great Ty Cobb on the trophy cup? Period trophies and awards abound in the hobby, but no other can boast an image of a contemporary player, let alone one as immortal as Ty Cobb. The classic Cobb image superbly emblazoned on the side of the cup is the very same used on his famous T-3 Turkey Red baseball card. Above the Georgia Peach's batting image is "STALL & DEAN" while "CHAMPIONSHIP CUP" is written below, all in contrasting silver upon the French Bronze finish. Though extremely scarce, the Cobb Stall & Dean cups which have survived usually bear the name of a winning ball club etched into the trophy - ours is a little more interesting in that it is an unused example with only the stately image of baseball's greatest hitter immortalized on the side. The 8 1/2" high cup shows exterior wear and a warm aged patina with minor scratches and nicks you would expect from a 100 year old award. A truly rare and desirable Ty Cobb collectible whose display appearance is simply magnificent.
