“Trying to hit Sandy Koufax was like trying to drink coffee with a fork” said feared Hall of Fame slugger Willie Stargell about Hall of Fame left-handed pitcher Sandy Koufax. Considered one of the greatest pitchers of all time, Koufax was prone to “tipping” the batters off by his inability to hide which pitch he was throwing and they still struggled to hit him. His curveball had the tendency of vertically dropping 12-24 inches and was so difficult to hit that noted sportswriter Rob Neyer called it the best curveball in Major League Baseball history. “I knew every pitch he was going throw and I still couldn’t hit him” said Hall of Famer Willie Mays. Kourfax pitched all 12 of his seasons with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers where the famed pitcher earned seven All-Star selections, three Cy Young Awards, four World Series titles. Named the World Series MVP twice, the three-time Triple Crown winner was a three-time MLB wins leader, a four-time MLB strikeout leader, and a five-time NL ERA leader. Koufax pitched four no-hitters including a perfect game in 1965. Koufax entered Cooperstown in 1972 at the age of 36, the youngest player to ever gain entrance into the Hall of Fame.
