Chick Fewster is one of those ballplayers whose name lives on as the answer to a great trivia question, in this case, “Who was the first player to bat in Yankee Stadium?” Chick Fewster has this distinction as the leadoff batter for the Boston Red Sox on Opening Day at the Stadium in 1923. Before that, Fewster was the Yankees second baseman from 1917 to 1922 and played a part in helping the Yanks win their first pennant in 1921. This bat, used by Fewster during the 1925-1928 period, found the second baseman playing for Cleveland before ending his career with Brooklyn after the 1927 season. It was with Brooklyn that Fewster found himself at the center of one of baseball’s most comical moments when he was one of the three Brooklyn baserunners to wind up at third base at the same time. This baserunning gaff of mythical proportions led to the old vaudeville joke of one man saying: “Brooklyn has three men on base” to which his partner quips, “Yeah, which one?” Fewster’s Hillerich & Bradsby shows outstanding game use with a repaired handle crack. Some checking from repeated ball contact is found on the back barrel and many ball marks can be seen on the right, left and back barrel. Factory side writing is present on the left barrel though it is now illegible. A great gamer from a player who has become a part of baseball history for more than just his batting average.
