The Bronx native George “Snuffy” Stirnweiss lived his boyhood dream when he signed with his hometown Yankees in 1940. A few years later he was the team’s second baseman and was a key member of the club which won the 1947 World Series, beginning a remarkable dynasty that lasted into the mid-1960s. Stirnweiss was a 2-time All-Star and 3-time World Champion with New York as well as the AL’s Batting Champ of 1945. His unique nickname came from his minor league days when he was known to both smoke a cigar and chew tobacco at the same time, leading a teammate to quip, “what – no snuff?” Stirnweiss wrapped up his career with Cleveland in 1952 and was tragically killed six years later when the commuter train he was riding on plunged into the Newark Bay. This Hillerich & Bradsby was used by Stirnweiss during the 1946-1948 era when he won a World Championship with the Yankees. The bat shows excellent use and is un-cracked. There is checking or grain swelling from repeated ball contact on the back barrel and several ball marks are seen on the right, left and back barrel. Cleat impressions are present as are green bat rack paint streaks. A tremendous bat used by a 3-time Yankees World Champion and batting champ. This bat comes with a STICKER ONLY from MEARS (308397) and a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B24912) for the game use and has been graded a solid GU 8.5.
