Presented here is an 8 ½ x 3 ¼ -inch 1927 check signed by former New York Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert and former New York Yankees business manager Ed Barrow. Ruppert, a former House of Representatives member, brewer, and owned the Yankees from 1915 till his death in 1939. Barrow served as the de facto general manager of the club from 1921 to 1939 and is largely credited with building the Yankees dynasties that dominated baseball during the 1920s. Barrow was the first executive to put numbers on players uniforms, allowed fans to keep foul balls, and the playing of the Star Spangled Banner before every game. Both Ruppert and Barrow are enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The check is labeled “THE AMERICAN LEAGUE BASEBALL CLUB OF NEW YORK, INC.” on the top of the check in embossed black. “No. 10831” is printed on the side of the check. The check is dated “November 4, 1927” and was paid to the order of “ALBANY BASEBALL CLUB” for the amount of $1500. The left corner of the check is labeled “TO MANUFACTURERS TRUST COMPANY YORKVILLE BANK OFFICE 1511 THIRD AVE.” Ruppert signed the portion of the check labeled “PRESIDENT” on the bottom right corner in black ink. Barrow signed the left side of the check labeled “COUNTERSIGNED SEC’Y & TREAS” in black ink. The reverse side of the check is labeled “DO NOT DETACH” at the top. The memo on the back of the check reads “Money advanced to buy pitchers Jeffcoat and Ferrebee from the St. Paul Club $1500” in typed black ink. The check to the Albany Baseball Club signed by Hall of Famers Ruppert and Barrow comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (AF09576) and comes encapsulated and authenticated by Beckett Authentication (00011490037).
