Graded GD 2 by PSA. Hall of Famer. This fabulous specimen stands among a total of just fourteen copies recorded in PSA's census reporting. While many of the cards produced later in Ruth's career depict the budding star in one of his famous batting poses, Collins-McCarthy chose a classic pitching revelation of the young left-hander for its 1916-17 release. After all, Ruth was already starting to come into his own as an accomplished pitcher by 1916, with his 23 wins that season easily overshadowing his three home runs. The offered rarity, in addition to the undeniable impact realized through its subject athlete's legendary status, boasts tremendous visual appeal. The item's cartophilic credentials are immediately apparent through census report statistics, and they're reinforced by informed discussions of industry lore. Putting those considerations aside for a moment, it's gratifying to reflect upon the irresistible qualities of this relic's physical presentation. This hobby treasure, picturing the slender hurler in his Boston Red Sox uniform, is one of the earliest cards ever to portray the great Babe Ruth. Its black-and-white image recalls the most prominent individual from a priceless time, and the effects felt by the thoughtful observer are incomparably evocative. This paper heirloom's photographic portrayal displays boldly, with precise focus. Honest wear is revealed at the corners and edges, and creasing near Ruth's right knee and ankle require concentration to discern. More than just a collectible, the object seen here is a supreme historical artifact. Its special character reaches a point beyond quantification, and its overall importance – on several levels – is fundamentally incalculable. Aesthetically favorable Good condition.
