Graded MINT 9 by PSA. Among nearly 4,000 copies recorded in PSA's census reporting, fewer than one percent have been placed at this admirable, unqualified tier. It's only natural that collectors gravitate to this '61 rendering of the reluctant hero, Maris. This was his season of destiny. Yet, lost in the tumult and adulation was the fact that this man had just captured an MVP award the season before. He was still a youngster here – entering only his second season in pinstripes. And it was by no random coincidence that he was assigned card number "2" in the issue, directly following Dick Groat – MVP in 1960's Senior Circuit. It's a small confession that there's actually one Maris card in '61 Topps exceeding this one in PSA's population records. However, the hobbyist who's content only with the finest will delight in this card – one fully deserving its evaluation. Indisputable Mint condition.
