Ty Cobb was a genius. He was first and foremost, a baseball player, but also a shrewd business man who put his name to anything where he could make a buck. He promoted literally dozens of items - including tobacco, but also candy. Offered is one of the scarcest "Ty Cobb" promotional items ever created - the Ty Cobb individual candy box. Produced and packaged by "Benjamin Candy Co., Detroit, Mich" these candies were available for a nickel each, which was "good money in them days!" Even though the side panel states "Advertised and Sold Nationally" since these boxes are scarcely seen, it must be assumed the young children didn't get their money's worth, and the product soon faded. I guess Cobb wasn't "A Winner Everywhere" as the lid also states. The box measures 4-3/4" x 3-1/2” x 1-1/4", and comprised of two pieces - a colorful lid, and the standard cardboard gray bottom. The box technically grades GD/VG, primarily due to a tiny hole at the top of the lid (and some light wrinkles), but overall the box displays much better. Usually in the case of 100 year old cardboard boxes, the corners eventually become separated, but each of these eight corners (four each on the lid and bottom) are completely intact. This is a must for the Ty Cobb collector, scarcely seen, rarely auctioned and in very presentable condition.
