Plate photography was the advancement from daguerreotypes, with one of the bigger benefits was use of the negative. With glass plate photography the photographic emulsion adheres to glass, which was eventually replaced by photographic film. Original glass plate negatives are difficult to locate and are extremely desirable, especially from a subject such as Walter Johnson. They are also very susceptible to wear including scratches and areas where the emulsion would pull away from the glass. However, this color glass negative appears to be in tremendous condition, and shows a Johnson apparently advertising something as he is holding a small bottle. The negative has a period sticker with “Walter Johnson Washington, baseball team” typed out. The other side has the photographer name “E.W. Goodrich. Tremont Temple, Boston.” This is a great item which would perfectly fit into even the best Walter Johnson, Washington Senators (Nationals) or baseball photographic collection.
