When baseball historians or fans discuss the greatest team of all time, most often the team is the 1927 New York Yankees. Known as Murderer’s Row, the lineup featured stalwarts Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, who combined for 107 home runs. The lineup also included HOFers Tony Lazzeri and Earl Combs, plus sluggers Bob Meusel and Joe Dugan. The pitching staff was so deep; each of the six pitchers who started 10 or more games had double digit victories. Before the first game of the 1927 World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, a team comprised of a bunch of singles hitters (Ruth out-homered the Pirates entire team), the Yankees lineup put on such an impressive display of batting practice power, the Pirates literally wilted before the Series even began and were swept in four games! This creamy-white OAL Ban Johnson baseball has the desirable red and blue stitching with bold stampings plus 23 fountain pen (“6-7”, a couple lighter and stronger) signatures, and those stampings indicate this ball is from the 1927 manufacturing period. Unfortunately, the key signature, that sweet spot script of the Sultan of Swat has been deemed a clubhouse version, as is the Tony Lazzeri signature on the President Signature panel. Includes: Babe Ruth (clubhouse, SS), Geo. Pipgras, Pat Collins, Jules Wera, Herb Pennock, Dutch Ruether, Bob Shawkey, Joe Giard, Myles Thomas, Waite Hoyt, Bob Meusel, Bennie Bengough, Chas. O’Leary, Tony Lazzeri (clubhouse), Ray Morehart, Earle Combs, Mike Gazella, Mark Koenig, Cedric Durst, Wilcy Moore, Ben Paschal, Lou Gehrig (“7”) and Joe Dugan. Despite the clubhouse Ruth, the ball is superb, with bold stampings and a very solid Lou Gehrig. Full LOA from JSA, cert number X78300.
