It was a Cincinnati Reds tradition of wearing green uniforms and helmets on St. Patrick’s Day. This size 7-1/8 ABC helmet has the standard internal cushioning with wrap around band and foam cushion inside shell. Within the top cushion is written the number “5” in black marker, which was Hall of Famer Johnny Bench’s jersey number. The outer green shell exhibits natural wear with multiple scratches, abrasions and small areas of grass stains. While we can’t confirm this helmet was worn by Bench during that March 17th spring training game, it is very likely this helmet is attributable to Bench. LOA from SCD Authentics, signed by Troy Kinunen (now of MEARS) and Dave Bushing.
Late 1970s St.Patricks Day Cincinnati Reds Batting Helmet Attributed to Johnny Bench
