Despite the impressive career numbers Mickey Mantle generated during his 18-year Yankee career, his offensive production would have been even better if not for the myriad of injuries he suffered. Beginning with his knee injury his rookie season during the 1951 World Series, Mantle suffered injuries to each area of his body. This vintage wire photo shows Mantle leaving the batter’s box after contact. However, each area where he suffered an injury is documented with a year which he suffered the particular injury. Seven different dates are affixed to the front, indicating everything from knee to wrist to neck injuries; all painful enough to keep Mantle form contributing on the field. The approximately 8” x 10” inch photo has editor pencil crop marks, a variety of enamel cracking and back damage from once being glued. His name is stamped on the verso with date “May 14, 1962” with portions of the original article still visible. Interestingly, while the date stamp is from 1962, one of the years listed on front is “1963” indicating this photo was used multiple times when Mantle suffered another injury. Simply a great Mantle image.
