During his rookie season of 1951, Mickey Mantle appeared in his first World Series, playing right field alongside centerfielder Joe DiMaggio. In this Game 2 first inning, Mantle leads off the Yankee offense with a bunt single, eventually scoring on a Gil McDougald single. However, this was Mantle’s last appearance in the 1951 World Series as four innings later Mantle chased a Willie Mays fly ball, and famously tore his knee in a Yankee Stadium drainpipe. This 6.5” x 9.5” inch photo has a mistake in the caption as it reads, “…as First Baseman Joe Collins waits for throw.” Collins was the Yankees first baseman, and player image is Whitey Lockman. Excellent condition and featuring Mickey Mantle during the game which defined Mantle’s injury history. Stamp on reverse indicates this original photo was owned by Bert Sugar, Hall of Fame boxing writer who was also a huge baseball fan, and collector of vintage baseball cards and photos.
