Well known for his powerful bat, Mickey Mantle was also a highly rated centerfielder. In fact, Mantle’s running catch of a Gil Hodges deep drive in the 1956 World Series saved Don Larsen’s perfect game. This lot contains five photos of Mickey flashing the leather. Includes: 1958 – chasing down Nellie Fox smash. 1961 – catching deep right center drive, with Maris also giving chase. Newspaper caption on verso, multiple creasing. 1964 – catching deep drive in World Series. 1967 – playing first base in spring training, catching wild pickoff attempt with Hank Aaron in background. Superb multi-all time great player image. 1968 – Mantle reaching into stands for popup, but ball snagged by fan.
