Graded NM 7 by PSA. Hall of Famer. Among nearly 3,300 copies recorded in PSA's census reporting, fewer than five percent have been placed at a higher, unqualified tier. This is the second card of Mickey Mantle issued by the Bowman Gum Company. It was during this season that Mantle first made his mark with the Yankees. First, he hit 23 home runs while batting .311 and, second, he took over in centerfield. Perhaps even more importantly, he took over the role of primary star and leader of the Yankees, filling the seemingly impossible leadership void left by Joe DiMaggio's retirement in 1951. (The card's image does reveal the confidence in the young slugger's expression.) This card possesses four well-shaped corners, and it displays bold colors. A superior incarnation of a popular Mantle depiction, in Near Mint condition.
