Known for making controversial stands, Muhammad Ali caught the attention of the country when he opted to back Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, a fellow boxer convicted of a triple homicide in New Jersey in 1967 and again in 1976. Carter was eventually released after the second conviction was overturned in 1985. This signed Boxing Illustrated magazine cover features Ali’s signature in bold, blue Sharpie next to an image of the fighter and the title “Ali Champion’s Rubin Carter’s Fight for FREEDOM.” The remainder of the cover is dominated by a photograph of Carter. “APRIL 1976” appears across the top of the cover, along with “$1.00” and a logo that reads “America’s Official Boxing Magazine.” The signed magazine cover comes with a PSA/DNA LOA with certification number “K74284.”
