Offered in this lot are two medals from the 1930 FIFA World Cup featuring the iconic Torre del Homenaje of the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay. The Estadio Centenario was built for the 1930 World Cup, and its name is an homage to the 1830 Constitution of Uruguay. Uruguay christened the stadium with a magical run to the World Cup title, defeating Argentina by a score of 4-2 in front of over 68,000 fans at the Centenario. One of these offered medals are bronze, and the other is silver, however the two 1-inch diameter medals are otherwise identical. One side has a high-relief etching of the Torre del Homenaje, while the reverse is etched with “A.U. de F / 1er Campeonato / Mundial / De / Football / Montevideo / 1930”. These two medals are in good condition and are fascinating relics from the era of the first FIFA World Cup. These items come with a LOA confirming they are part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
