The Uruguayan forward Oscar Omar Miguez was awarded this rectangular medal after Uruguay claimed the 1956 South American Championship. Uruguay finished the six-game tournament undefeated, with a narrow 1-0 victory over Argentina at Montevideo’s Estadio Centenario in the round-robin tournament’s final game. Miguez and Guillermo Escalada led Uruguay in scoring with three goals apiece to give the proud footballing nation their ninth title in the tournament now called the Copa America.

Miguez earned 39 caps for la celeste, winning the 1950 FIFA World Cup with Uruguay and participating in the 1954 edition of the tournament. Miguez remains Uruguay’s leading scorer in the World Cup, with eight of his 27 international goals coming on soccer’s grandest stage. Domestically, Miguez played for Penarol in Uruguay and Sporting Cristal in Peru.

This offered medal features a scene of three soccer players, including an attacker, a defender, and a diving goalkeeper, etched in high relief in front of the Centenario’s Tower of Homage. Enameled Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay flags are located near the top border of the medal. Etched in high relief on the bottom of the front is “Campeonato Sudamericano Extra”. Etched on the back of this historic medal is “Asociacion Uruguaya De Football / 50 Aniversario / Oscar Omar Miguez / Montevideo / Enero Febrero / 1956”.
