Unusual circumstances inspire creativity, and the mid-career trade of a future Baseball Hall of Famer certainly qualifies as an odd development. Superstar catcher Mike Piazza's long and memorable big league service was divided between successful terms with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets. But, between Piazza's first major stop and his second, he served a one-week stint with the Florida Marlins. During this week-long interlude, he played in five games and managed five hits with five RBI's. His time with the Marlins, in other words, amounted to just a footnote within the context of his tremendous overall statistical accomplishments.

The significance of Piazza's Marlins tour resonated strongly, however, with a single perceptive collector. This gentleman – a California attorney – recognized that Mike Piazza began to appear on trading cards, as a Florida Marlin, with inexplicable regularity. Intrigued, the quest to gather as many Piazza/Marlins collectibles as possible began in earnest. With every acquisition, it seemed, more worthy candidates for inclusion in the project emerged. The effort to find them all continued, and gained momentum.

Along the collecting trail, the Piazza/Marlins enthusiast enjoyed the chase: he investigated, searched, networked and negotiated, finding productive leads and enduring disappointments. Through it all, other people noticed. The collection was helped along by a variety of hobbyists, and eventually the news media. Before long, the growing Piazza/Marlins project had been showcased and described by such outlets as the New York Times, ESPN, Sports Collectors Daily and the Sun Sentinel of South Florida. Even the National Baseball Hall of Fame – doubtless inspired by increasing "buzz" about Piazza/Marlins – hopped on board: the institution requested and was granted permission to borrow a portion of the collection for public display. With that, an initially small, but creative endeavor hit the "Big Time," and thousands of fans were able to share an appreciation for a quirky but meaningful aspect of baseball history.

Offered here is an abundantly extensive, 112-piece collection of Mike Piazza Florida Marlins baseball cards that is highlighted by thirteen "1 of 1" serial-numbered pieces. (Also included in the collection is a May 25, 1998 issue of Sports Illustrated magazine, which contains an exclusive feature on Mike Piazza). General interest in the collection, as reflected by media coverage and the unfailingly favorable response to that publicity, has been simply staggering in its depth, and it dwarfs the attention paid to even some of the most famous of the hobby's mainstream "classics." The array's Hall of Fame provenance is equally exciting. This Piazza/Marlins assembly is perhaps the most unusual card collection ever constructed of a single Hall of Famer, and it is truly unique.
