Jesse Burkett was one of the greatest hitters of the dead ball era, a slight left fielder who excelled at spraying the ball across the field. A three-time batting champion, Burkett holds MLB’s all-time record for inside-the-park home runs, with 55. Burkett’s career began in 1890, as a combination pitcher and hitter, and ended in 1906. Nicknamed “Crab” for his cantankerous nature, Burkett finished his career with a sterling .338 batting average and 2,850 hits.

Offered here is a letter sent by Burkett in 1935 to Ford Frick, the president of the National League. Burkett is writing to Frick because of his offer to “forward a Season Pass to the National League games to any old-time ball players provided [Frick] had their address”. Burkett also lists his accomplishment in this letter, typing “As you no doubt know, I was a National League player – leading the league in 1895, 1896, and 1901 – batting average of .421, .410, and .402”. He finishes the letter by typing “I would appreciate very much receiving a pass from you as I quite often have occasion to drive into Boston and always enjoy seeing a good game.” Burkett typed this letter on March 23rd, 1935, addressing it to the National League president. Please note that he misspelled Frick’s name as “Flick”. Burkett has signed the bottom of this typed letter in bold black fountain pen as “Jesse C. Burkett”. Also included in this lot is an unsigned reply from the National League offices confirming that Burkett would receive a pass to games. These letters are a tremendous relic from the life of one of the dead ball era’s finest players. This item comes with a LOA from Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication.
