Holding a preseason ranking as the # 10 team in the country, the 1998 Tennessee Volunteers football team did not take long to show they were even better that that. In the second game of the season, Tennessee defeated # 2 Florida by a score of 20-17. By season’s end, the Vols moved all the way up to # 1, and in the Fiesta Bowl faced # 2 Florida State. A 23-16 victory gave the Volunteers a perfect 13-0 record and the National Championship. Wide receiver Peerless Price caught 61 balls for 920 yards and 10 touchdowns, while also posting a 27.8-yard kickoff return average with one return TD. Quarterback Tee Martin threw for 2,164 yards and 19 TDs and rushed for another seven scores. Running back Travis Henry had 970 rushing yards and seven TDs.
