Lot #3540: Lot of Four (4) 1965-1969 Steve Prefontaine Manfield High School Yearbooks

Description

Presented here are four yearbooks from Manfield High School featuring the legendary American distance runner Steve Prefontaine. A force of nature in his brief career, “Pre” finished an impressive fourth in the 5,000m race at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics despite being the youngest runner in the field by a full two years. The Oregon Ducks star was the first track athlete sponsored by Nike and a pioneer in the professionalization of track and field. Prefontaine started his high school career strong and went through his junior cross-country season undefeated and won a state title. He went undefeated his senior year, winning two state titles while setting a national record of 8:41.5 at the Corvallis Invitational. These four presented yearbooks are from Manfield High School in Coos Bay, Oregon, Prefontaine’s alma mater. Prefontaine attended the school from 1965 to 1969, and these four yearbooks are from every year he attended the school. The yearbooks are in various forms of condition from fair to good and feature a young Prefontaine before he went on to represent the United States in the Olympics. These presented yearbooks offer a rare glimpse into the life of one of America’s most famous and iconic runners.
