Lot #733: 2001 Cal Ripken Game Used Louisville Slugger P72 Model Bat Used In July (Ripken LOA & PSA/DNA GU 9)

Description

The legendary shortstop Cal Ripken, Jr. played his final MLB season in 2001, ending a career that saw him collected over 3,000 hits and 431 home runs. Ripken, baseball’s all-time leader in consecutive games started, played in his 19th All-Star Game in 2001, hitting a home run off Chan Ho Park and earning All-Star Game MVP honors. In 2007, Ripken was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on his first ballot, collecting 98.5% of the vote. This offered Louisville Slugger P72 model bat comes directly from the personal collection of Cal Ripken, Jr. and was used by Cal in July of the 2001 season. This bat displays outstanding game use and has a crack in the handle. There are ball marks, blue ink transfers and white leather scuffs present on the barrel, along with some checking or grain swelling from repeated ball contact on the front barrel. There is a moderate coating of pine tar on the handle and the top barrel has abrasion marks from constant contact with the ground. Ripken has added athletic tape around the mid-barrel and notated “Gamer Atlanta, Fla, Texas, Anaheim” and “Broken 5 of 5 Game in Calif 1st AB”. This notation matches a set of games the Orioles played from July 12th through July 23rd when the Orioles faced the Atlanta Braves, Florida Marlins, Texas Rangers (one game) and Anaheim Angels. This bat comes directly from the personal collection of Cal Ripken, Jr. and a signed LOA from Cal will accompany this bat. Additionally, there is a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B19763) for the game use and has been given a very high grade of GU 9.
