Lot #666: 1961 Warren Spahn Most Valuable Player Plaque Presented by the Baseball Writers Association of America Milwaukee Chapter

Warren Spahn’s 1961 campaign is the stuff of legends, with the 40-year old hurler leading the National League in wins, with 21, for the fifth straight season. Spahn tossed an incredible 21 complete games, with four shutouts and a 3.02 ERA, and a 1.142 WHIP, leading the Senior Circuit in all four of those significant statistical categories. Spahn’s 300th of his 363 career wins came on August 11th, 1961, as Spahn threw a one-run, complete game in a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs in a stretch of 10-consecutive winning decisions.

This offered Manning Vaughan 1961 Most Valuable Player award plaque was presented to the Hall of Famer by the Milwaukee chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Engraved on the plaque is “Manning Vaughan Award / Presented To / Warren Spahn / Most Valuable Player, 1961 / Milwaukee Chapter / Baseball Writers Association of America / 9th Annual Diamond Dinner / January 21, 1962”. Also featured on the plaque’s front is a portrait of Spahn, a baseball ornament, and two laurel boughs. Etched on the back of the plaque is “Custom Made / Trophy Athletic / Supply Co / Milwaukee, Wis / U.S.A.” A historic collectible, in lovely condition!
