Lot #3610: 1963 White House Response Card on Behalf of John F. Kennedy & Jaqueline Kennedy

Description

Presented here is a 6 x 3 ½ -inch response card with a 6 ½ x 3 ¾ -inch envelope on Official White House lettering sent to a Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Watson of Springfield, Missouri. During Kennedy’s term as President, he supported the Civil Rights Movement, the Apollo Space Program, went to battle against the war on communism, the Cuban Missile crisis, and Fidel Castro. This presented response card is labeled “The President and Mrs. Kennedy deeply appreciate your thoughtfulness and expression of sympathy at this time” in bold black cursive across the response card in response to an unknown letter sent by the Watson family. The response card comes with an envelope on Official White House letterhead. “THE WHITE HOUSE” appears in black on the top right corner of the envelope. A 5-cent stamp with black postal cancellation marks appears on the top right corner. A postal receiving stamp reads “WASHINGTON 1 00 PM 20 AUG 1963” in black next to the 5-cent stamp. The number “544-1741” in blue ink by an unknown hand appears across the envelope. “I LOVE ALL RELATIVES” appears in red crayon on the back of the envelope. The response card is in fantastic condition, and the envelope features elements of toning and tearing from being opened. The letter was received by the Watson’s just a few months before President Kennedy was tragically assassinated on November 22, 1963 in Dallas during a campaign stop through Texas. The response letter and envelope are a somber commemorative to a Presidency tragically cut short.
