Lot #17: Babe Ruth High-Grade Single Signed & Inscribed Worth Baseball (PSA/DNA MINT 9 & JSA)

Description

There have been other beautiful and distinctive ballplayer signatures throughout the past century – Ted Williams’ even script, Roberto Clemente’s ornate cursive and Ty Cobb’s iconic green mark – yet none look as comfortable or as perfect on a baseball as Babe Ruth’s. The Babe’s unimpeachable place in the history of the game as well as his standing as an American icon has made his signature on a ball the most sought-after piece of sports memorabilia. His bold and fluid script fits perfectly, the eight characters in his name being the perfect length when displaying the curved surface of the ball.

If one had to pick just one item to represent the category of sports collectibles, it would be a Babe Ruth single-signed baseball just like the one offered here. The Babe has signed the side panel of this Worth Special League Bush League ball in strong dark blue steel-tipped fountain pen. This Worth ball has distinctive red and blue stitching and the nice condition of the ball makes this a very attractive canvas for the Babe’s classic mark. A rarity for this ball has Ruth’s signature on the side panel, with many of the single-signed exemplars in the hobby showing his signature on the sweet spot. Ruth also added the inscription above his name “To Louie Dunkak From”. The surface of the ball shows some toning from age and some staining around the inscription, but Ruth’s distinctive signature leaps off the leather. A tremendous single-signed example of Babe Ruth’s signature – the most iconic baseball collectible. The ball comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (AK00791), who have graded Ruth’s signature a MINT 9, plus an additional LOA from JSA (Z97241) for the signature and inscriptions.
